MONHEGAN ISLAND — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching for a man believed swept off a rocky ledge on the Maine coast.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department contacted the Coast Guard around 1:11 p.m. today, reporting a 32-year-old man was knocked into the water near Monhegan Island by a wave.

The Coast Guard says three others on Gull Rock made it to safety and that a fourth was rescued from the ledge by a Jayhawk helicopter.

The Maine Marine Patrol, Monhegan Island Volunteer Fire Department and local fishing boats were assisting in the search for the missing man late this afternoon.

The Coast Guard says the water was being churned up by tropical storm Katia, with 5- to 8-foot seas.
