When the Texas Rangers were last in Boston, outfielder David Murphy enjoyed the series against his old organization. Murphy batted .500 (7 for 14) with a triple, home run and three RBI.

For the season, Murphy is batting .478 (11 for 23) against his old team.

Murphy, 29, who played for the Sea Dogs in 2005 and ’06, was dealt in 2007 to Texas in the ill-fated Eric Gagne deal.

Against all teams he’s batting .270 with nine home runs.

How have other former Sea Dogs fared after the Red Sox traded or released them?

Anthony Rizzo, 22, was part of the biggest trade of the offseason, heading to the Padres in the Adrian Gonzalez deal. Rizzo tore up Triple-A with a .331 average, 26 home runs and 101 RBI in 93 games. He was promoted for 36 games at midseason (.139 average), then went back to the minors. Rizzo was recalled last week.

Casey Kelly, 21, was also in the Gonzalez trade. He finished his second full season pitching in Double-A, recording an 11-6 record and 3.98 ERA. He had 105 strikeouts in 1421/3 innings.

Yamaico Navarro, 23, was sent to the Kansas City Royals on July 30 in a deal that landed utility player Mike Aviles in Boston. Navarro batted .272 in 25 games in Triple-A and was called up to Kansas City in September.

Tim Federowicz, 24, was one of the three Sea Dogs players involved in the three-team deal that brought Erik Bedard to Boston. Federowicz went to the Dodgers, who promoted him to Triple-A Albuquerque. He responded with a .325 average and six homers in 25 games. His reward? Federowicz was called up Tuesday to the Dodgers.

Stephen Fife, 24, also went to the Dodgers in the Bedard trade, and was 3-0 with a 4.01 ERA for Double-A Chattanooga.

Chih-Hsien Chiang, 23, headed to the Mariners in the Bedard deal. His adjustment wasn’t smooth. After hitting 18 home runs for Portland, Chiang batted .208 with no homers in 32 games for Double-A Jackson.

Bubba Bell, 29, was sent to the Indians at the end of spring training for future considerations. He hit .292 in eight Triple-A games, then was traded to the Mets. Along with six Double-A games, Bell played 67 games for Triple-A Buffalo, batting .228 with a homer.

Aaron Bates, 27, was released at the end of spring training and eventually signed with the Twins. He batted .316 in 106 games for Triple-A Rochester, with seven home runs and a .409 on-base percentage.

Dusty Brown, 28, was designated for assignment at the end of last year and signed a minor league contract with the Pirates. Called up to the majors in June, Brown batted only .107 in 11 games and was sent back to the minors. He batted .285 in 54 Triple-A games, with seven home runs and 28 RBI.

Brandon Moss, 27, was traded to the Pirates in the Jason Bay deal in 2008. Moss played for Pittsburgh in 2009 and was sent to the minors in 2010. He signed with the Phillies this year and batted .275 with 23 home runs for Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

When I caught up with Moss recently, when Lehigh Valley played in Pawtucket, he remained the same positive player he was in Portland. He’s no longer a prospect, but a guy hoping to get another shot.

“I got an opportunity where you may be the guy (called up) if something happens and you’re doing well,” Moss said about signing with the Phillies. “Just play well, do the best you can, and try to find a place.

“It isn’t the path that I envisioned for myself. But at the same time I’m still here, still playing. Still have an opportunity.”

NOTES: Three players from this year’s Sea Dogs reached the majors — Tommy Hottovy, Ryan Lavarnway and Federowicz. … Professional freestyle skier Simon Dumont of Bethel will throw out the first pitch Friday at Fenway Park. … The Sea Dogs will announce their 2012 schedule later this month, with tickets going on sale Nov. 5.
