FALMOUTH – A 17-year-old boy drowned Saturday while swimming with friends in the Presumpscot River, police said. They identified the boy as Mohamed Hassan of Springbrook Way in Portland.

The incident happened about 5:30 p.m. when five boys were swimming along the edge of the river off Allen Avenue Extension, said Lt. John Kilbride of the Falmouth police.

Hassan started struggling, Kilbride said, and went under the water.

The other four tried to locate him, but could not because the water was too murky, he said.

Police and the Falmouth Marine Unit responded after they got a call from the swimmers.

The Maine Marine Patrol and Yarmouth Rescue Dive Team sent divers to search for the 17-year-old, who was found only a few feet from where he and the others were swimming.

Kilbride said the boy’s body was recovered about 7:20 p.m., just before the search was expected to be called off due to darkness.
