MONHEGAN ISLAND — The U.S. Coast Guard has ended the search for the body of a man swept off a ledge on Monhegan Island.
Officials say 32-year-old Thomas Clarke of Dublin, Ireland, was on Monhegan Island Friday for a wedding when a wave swept him into the sea.
Clarke and five friends were hiking along the Gull Rock Ledge when a swell from Hurricane Katia knocked him into the water. Four others were trapped in a cave until they could be rescued.
Jessica Stevens of the Monhegan Volunteer Fire Department tells the Bangor Daily News it’s likely the hikers couldn’t see the big wave coming.
The fire department and U.S. Coast Guard immediately began a search for Clarke, but he couldn’t be located.
