AUBURN — Police in Maine say two Bates College students are safe after they were plucked from an island in the Androscoggin River between Lewiston and Auburn as the sun went down.

Police were called to the Great Falls area shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday after callers reported the two men were on a rocky island just below the falls.

The men, who were not publicly identified, made several attempts to get to shore on their own, but were unable to do so.

The Sun Journal says Auburn police used a boat to rescue to the pair.
