PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Kelly Newton became the University of Maine field hockey program’s career goal-scoring leader Friday, helping the Black Bears to a 5-0 victory over Providence.

Newton, a senior co-captain, had three goals and two assists. She tipped in a shot by Jocelyn Mitchell to give the Black Bears (7-1) the lead 10:20 into the match and surpass Janet Hoskin’s 47 career goals from 1978-81.

Newton assisted Alexa Binnendijk and Mitchell and scored twice in the second half to complete her hat trick against the Friars (2-5).

Brittany Fleck had three saves to record her second straight shutout.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

UMASS 1, MAINE 0: Moa Mattsson scored from 20 yards in the 88th minute to give Massachusetts (4-2-1) a win over Maine (3-2-1) at Amherst, Mass.

Black Bears goalie Meagan Price-Leibenzeder made five saves.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

UMAINE: Nate Philippe has been hired as an assistant coach, the school announced.

Philippe most recently was with the University of North Dakota where he was responsible for recruiting, scouting and academic monitoring and also worked with post players.

FOOTBALL

(4) BOISE STATE 40, TOLEDO 15: Kellen Moore threw for 455 yards and five touchdowns to lead Boise State (2-0) over Toledo (1-2) at Toledo, Ohio.

Moore misfired on his first two throws but was nearly perfect after that, connecting on 32 of 42 passes. His fourth touchdown throw, a 12-yarder to tight end Kyle Efaw, put the Broncos up 27-9 midway through the third quarter.

IOWA STATE 24, UCONN 20: Darius Reynolds had 128 yards receiving and two second-half touchdowns to lead Iowa State (3-0) to a win over Connecticut (1-2) at East Hartford, Conn.

BRYANT 26, SACRED HEART 6: Jordan Brown rushed for 248 yards and returned a punt for a touchdown, leading Bryant (2-1, 1-0 Northeast Conference) to a victory over Sacred Heart (0-2, 0-1) at Fairfield, Conn.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Starting guard Tobias Smith is out for the season after tearing ligaments in his left knee during Thursday’s 19-6 loss to LSU.
