GREENVILLE — The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash of a small plane that killed a Massachusetts man in the northern Maine town of Greenville.

Officials said a Cessna 172M piloted by David Finnegan of Woburn, Mass., crashed Saturday morning shortly after taking off from the Greenville Municipal Airport.

Greenville Police Chief Jeffrey Pomerleau told the Bangor Daily News that Finnegan was pronounced dead at the scene after searchers found the plane. The pilot was the only person on board.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Jim Peter said the cause of the crash is unknown. Because there was a death involved, the National Transportation Board is investigating.
