When Fryeburg Academy field hockey coach DeDe Frost watched her team lose 1-0 to Greely in the first week of the season, she did not notice a letdown.

“It was very interesting,” Frost said. “The girls were really excited. Greely scored at the end. The girls were feeling that we needed another five minutes. They just ran out of time. They were very excited to face them again.”

Indeed, the Raiders went on a roll since that first Greely game. Not only did they beat powerhouse York 2-1 on Sept. 9, the Raiders met Greely again last week — in Fryeburg — and won 3-0.

“When Greely came here, the same thing happened in the first half,” Frost said. “No one made a tremendous amount of offensive gain.

“In the second half, the kids came alive. They realized that maybe they need to get it done before the clock runs out.”

Fryeburg took a 1-0 lead on a snazzy goal. Sage Hennessy buried a shot after pinpoint passes from Ellen Bacchiocchi and Christina DiPietro.

“It’s really fun when the kids actually execute something in a game that they worked so hard on in practice,” Frost said.

Bacchiocchi secured the game with two goals. Keeper Brittany Fox had 10 saves.

The Raiders are powered by their front line, led by Bacchiocchi, DiPietro, Hennessy, Maddy Smith and Eleanor Jones. Fryeburg graduated all its defenders from last year, but Fox is providing leadership — and saves.

“She is holding down the fort defensively, doing a lot of directing,” Frost said.

After a 1-0 win over Sacopee Valley on Monday, the Raiders are 6-1. They have a tough match with Falmouth coming up Wednesday. “(Falmouth) will be a really good game for us,” Frost said. “That’s what you want, to play these great teams. See how you compare, and what you need to do to improve.”

CHEVERUS BECAME the only unbeaten, untied Western Class A team, after Sanford (6-0-1) and Scarborough (5-0-1) played to a 2-2 tie last week. The Stags (7-0) play Marshwood today and at Scarborough on Thursday.
