MEDWAY — The head of the Maine Snowmobile Association says conservationist Roxanne Quimby is offering snowmobile clubs five years of access to trails on her land in exchange for their support for her plan for a national park.

Executive Director Bob Meyers says some of the clubs have rejected Quimby’s offer, others have accepted it and others are mulling it over.

Meyers, who opposes Quimby’s national park plan, told the Bangor Daily News that snowmobilers are expressing resentment over what they feel is a coercive and divisive offer from Quimby.

Quimby has proposed giving the National Park Service about 70,000 acres of her land adjacent to Baxter State Park, but her plan has drawn widespread opposition in the region. Quimby did not immediately respond to the paper’s request for comment.
