Josh Mitchell, a sophomore at York High School, texts while driving a golf cart with Officer Steve Morrill through an obstacle course at the school on Tuesday. The demonstration, part of a two-day driver safety fair sponsored by York police and the Department of Health and Human Services Maine Injury Prevention Program, will be presented to about 500 students and staff at the school as the fair continues today. The fair coincides with a new law taking effect today in Maine that bans the practice of texting while driving. Maine joins 33 other states in outlawing the practice, for which it sets a minimum $100 fine. “Texting” consists of reading or manually composing electronic communications, including text messages, instant messages and emails, using a portable electronic device.
