PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — Nearly 90 years after she cut a silk ribbon to open the bridge between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine, former Portsmouth Mayor Eileen Foley will lead a “tying-off” ceremony to bid the bridge farewell.
The 88-year-old Memorial Bridge was closed to vehicles in July after it was determined to be unsafe. Foley, who was 5 when she helped open the bridge, will be on hand today for a “Lift-Off” party celebrating the bridge’s history.
The event includes food, music, games, bridge tours and ferry rides. There will be a fireworks show in the evening, followed by an outdoor showing of the movie “Finding Nemo.”
