PORTLAND — A paraplegic skipper is being credited with actions that helped save the lives of all but one crew member on his fishing boat as it took on water in rough seas off Maine.

The 24-foot boat rolled over Friday more than 5 miles off Kennebunkport. One sailor died.

But the Maine Marine Patrol says things could have been worse if skipper Nicholas Masi III, of Biddeford, hadn’t calmly told his three crew members to put on survival suits and issued a mayday.

A passing yacht heard the distress call and pulled out three of the men. A lobster boat pulled out the fourth.

The man who died was pulled out by the yacht and was identified as 47-year-old Douglas Isenberg, of Biddeford.
