Mary Anne Wallace, a docent with Friends of Evergreen, top, explains to a group of seventh-graders from Lincoln Middle School what footstones are during a tour of Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Avenue in Portland on Tuesday. Wallace and other guides enlightened students about some of the famous Mainers buried on the grounds. Social Studies teacher Randy Bigelman planned the trip as part of a service-learning project for his class.
Below, Wallace provides a history of Evergreen Cemetery to students in Wilde Memorial Chapel, located in the cemetery.
