AUGUSTA — A conservative public policy group is finding fault with Maine’s voter registration system, saying it shows more registered voters than voting-age citizens in the state.
The Maine Heritage Policy Center released a report today saying that in three of the last 10 elections, there were more registered voters than voting-age Maine citizens.
It also shows 1,452 active registrants listed as being 211 years old, and more than 2,200 active registrants having no street addresses.
The report also claims to refute other studies showing that Election Day registration increases voter participation. Authors of the report say same-day registration is a “laudable goal,” but it shouldn’t be implemented until Maine has a stronger voting structure.
The Secretary of State’s Office, which oversees elections, did not immediately respond to the report’s findings.
