WINDHAM — A 57-year-old Portland man is dead following a crash on Route 302 in Windham Thursday.

Police say Stephen Aylward was driving a 1997 Saturn east near 299 Roosevelt Trail when the Saturn apparently crossed the center line and collided with a 1997 Chevrolet pickup driven by Todd Taylor, 39, of Standish.

The crash was at 4:23 p.m. Taylor was taken to Maine Medical Center for observation.

Aylward was a political science and hstory professor at St. Joseph’s College in Standish. 

The college issued a statement today, saying that Aylward was a popular and highly regarded faculty member whose expertise was in international military cooperation. The college said Aylward worked throughout his career to improve methods of intelligence analysis and he had coordinated humanitarian
endeavors in troubled regions of the world.

Aylward was also an outdoor enthusiast who sat on the Trails Committee of Portland Trails.

“Dr. Aylward was respected and loved by students, faculty and staff and will be greatly
missed,” the college said.
