BAR HARBOR — The first College of the Atlantic alumnus to lead the Maine institution says he wants to explore the possibility of a tuition-free campus in the future.
Darron Collins was installed as president on Sunday and described the Bar Harbor college as “the greatest educational experiment in recent history.” He admitted that his idea of a tuition-free college isn’t likely “within one decade or even two.”
College of the Atlantic was founded in 1969 with a focus on human ecology.
Collins, class of 1992, developed a passion for rivers while in college before receiving a doctorate in anthropology from Tulane University. He has served for the past 10 years at the World Wildlife Fund. He replaces David Hales, who stepped down in December.
