WISCASSET — A Congregational church has its steeple back — and it’s made out of fiberglass.

The church in Wiscasset is next to the county courthouse. It’s actually the third church to occupy the spot; the last one burned down. The original church and steeple were built in 1909.

The weather took its toll on the church. About a year ago, a painting crew discovered the steeple was rotted, so the church started a fundraising effort for a new one.

WCSH-TV reports about $250,000 was raised — enough to pay for steeplejack George Burgess and his crew to demolish the old spire and create the new one. It was lowered into place Monday.
