BALDWIN — A police dog and dogged detective work are being credited with the swift arrest of two suspects accused of a Baldwin home burglary earlier this week.

Police charged Michael Hatch of Springvale and Jonathan Gough of Arundel, both 26, with burglary. The men are accused of approaching a house on Pequawkat Trail wearing dark clothing and ski masks on Monday with the intent to break in and steal items they had spotted when they delivered a bed there a year ago, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The burglary attempt was interrupted by the homeowner. The woman challenged the burglars, then called police, leading the pair to run away.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Tufts and his canine Rocky tracked the suspects and found discarded ski masks and a backpack. They also found a delivery invoice from November for items from Bob’s Discount Furniture. Investigators located the delivery company, New England Home Delivery Cooperative, and eventually were able to identify two suspects.

One of them drives a maroon minivan that matched the description of a vehicle seen leaving the area of the burglary. Following interviews, Hatch and Gough were charged.

The pair are each being held in Cumberland County Jail on $560 bail pending an initial court date later this week.
