AUGUSTA — Roughly 40 fish and game wardens plan to run from Vassalboro to Augusta in memory of their fallen comrades.

The Warden Service members will leave the Maine Criminal Justice Academy in Vassalboro at 9:45 a.m. today and finish at the Fallen Officers Memorial near the State House in the early afternoon.

The 4th annual event is to honor the 15 Maine game wardens who died in the line of duty since 1880. But this year it is dedicated to one warden in particular, pilot Daryl Gordon, who died in a plane crash last March 24 on a northern Maine lake.

After the run, a short recognition ceremony will take place at the memorial, followed by a reception at the main office of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
