PORTSMOUTH, N.H. — The New Hampshire Fish and Game Department is holding a meeting to set fishing season dates for the northern shrimp which studies show is overfished.

The session will be Oct. 28 at the Portsmouth Harbor Events & Conference Center. The public will be given an opportunity to speak at the meeting to discuss the 2011-2012 shrimp season and rules governing it.

A preliminary assessment shows the stock of shrimp is overfished and overfishing is occurring. Officials say the abundance of shrimp in the western Gulf of Maine also has steadily declined in the past five years. For those and other reasons, a significantly reduced harvest limit is being considered.
