STORRS, Conn. – Myriam Croussette had a goal and two assists in the first period as the University of Maine women took a 3-1 lead and held on for a 4-3 win over Connecticut in the Hockey East opener for both teams.
Brittany Dougherty and Missy Denk also scored in the first period for the Black Bears (5-2). Jennifer More made it 4-1 in the second.
The Huskies (0-5-2) narrowed the gap with third-period goals by Rachel Farrel and Caitlin Hewes.
FIELD HOCKEY
UNH 3, MAINE 0: Whitney Frates scored twice to lead the 10th-ranked Wildcats (14-3, 4-0 America East) past the 13th-ranked Black Bears (14-3, 2-2) at Durham, N.H.
Frates put New Hampshire ahead in the 24th minute. She and Hayley Rausch added goals in the final six minutes to seal it.
Katherine Nagengast made six saves for the shutout. Maine’s Brittany Fleck also had six saves.
FOOTBALL
SYRACUSE 49, (11) WEST VIRGINIA 23: Ryan Nassib threw three touchdown passes to tight end Nick Provo, Dorian Graham returned a kickoff 98 yards for another score, and Syracuse (5-2, 1-1 Big East) stunned visiting West Virginia (5-2, 1-1).
LOUISVILLE 16, RUTGERS 14: Chris Philpott tied a school record with a 52-yard field goal and Teddy Bridgewater threw a touchdown pass in the third quarter as Louisville (3-4, 1-1 Big East) beat visiting Rutgers (5-2, 2-1) to snap a three-game losing streak.
SUSPENSIONS: The Pac-12 Conference suspended 10 players for their involvement in a fight that occurred during the first half of the UCLA-Arizona game Thursday night.
