AUGUSTA — Maine newspapers are taking editorial positions on voting and gambling questions on the Nov. 8 ballot.

The Bangor Daily News on Monday called for passage of Question 2, which would allow a slots casino in Biddeford and a track and a casino in Calais. The News says the proposal is worthy, even though the casinos won’t bring Maine the kind of sustainable prosperity it needs. It says cultural and moral taboos on casino gambling in Maine are tattered and faded.

The Times Record in Brunswick and the Portsmouth Herald in New Hampshire have endorsed passage of Question 1, which would repeal the law requiring voters to register at least two business days before an election. It would also reinstate the law allowing registration up to and including Election Day.
