CAPE ELIZABETH – Timing is everything in the playoffs. Melanie Vangel and the Cape Elizabeth girls’ soccer team have excellent timing.

Vangel tied the game with a minute left in regulation as the second-seeded Capers (12-1-2) went on to beat Deering 2-1 on penalty kicks in a Western Class A quarterfinal Tuesday.

Vangel and Addison Wood each converted their penalty kick attempts for the Capers and Alexis Johnson made a pair of saves. Meaghan Wells had the lone made penalty kick for Deering (7-7-2).

The game was scoreless until Alexis Elowitch scored for the Rams with 10 minutes left in the game.

BRUNSWICK 6, HAMPDEN ACADEMY 1: Becky Champagne scored a pair of goals to lead the second-seeded Dragons (14-1) as they downed the seventh-seeded Broncos (8-7-1) in an Eastern Class A quarterfinal at Brunswick. Dakota Foster, Cassandra Murano, Anna Cowan and Rachel Moroney each scored for Brunswick.

WATERVILLE 1, MT. ARARAT 0: Alexa Frame scored a second-half goal and Morgan Tortorella recorded the shutout to lift the fourth-seeded Panthers (11-3-1) to an Eastern Class A quarterfinal victory over the fifth-ranked Eagles (9-5-1) at Waterville.

YORK 3, FREEPORT 1: Kayla Swasey had two goals and an assist to lead the second-seeded Wildcats (11-3-1) past the seventh-seeded Falcons (8-8) at York in a Western Class B quarterfinal. Swasey scored after 10 minutes on a pass from Alexa Bando, then got her second midway through the half from Abby Goodrich.

OCEANSIDE 2, CAMDEN HILLS 0: Jill Bradbury scored in the first half and Erika Brooks added a second-half goal as the fourth-seeded Mariners (11-2-2) beat the fifth-seeded Windjammers (10-4-2) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Rockland.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 3, MADISON 2: Miranda Lessard scored on an assist from Anna Foss on a shot from 25 yards out with five minutes left in overtime to lift the seventh-seeded Seagulls (11-5) to an upset win over the second-seeded Bulldogs (12-2-1) in a Western Class C quarterfinal at Madison.

GREENVILLE 9, A.R. GOULD 0: Tristan Richards had three goals and three assists to lead the second-seeded Lakers (9-4-2) past the seventh-seeded Bears (4-9) in a Western Class D quarterfinal at Greenville.
