NEWRY — Maine’s Sunday River ski resort says it’s opening this weekend to kick off the ski season.

Sunday River is opening its Locke Mountain chairlift today, with plans to reopen it again Sunday and Monday. After Monday, it will shut down temporarily with plans to reopen next weekend.

Resort officials say this is the fifth straight year the mountain has opened to skiing in October.

Skiers who come dressed in costume will get free lift tickets on Halloween.
