AUGUSTA — A Democratic state representative is urging Mainers to overturn a law that eliminates Election Day voter registration.

In today’s weekly Democratic radio address, Rep. Bob Duchesne of Hudson says Maine has never had a voter fraud problem since the law went into effect in 1973 allowing people to register at the polls at the time they vote.

The Republican-controlled Legislature last spring passed a new law that eliminated voter registration on Election Day and during the two business days before an election.

Duchesne said voters can restore the former law by voting “yes” on Question 1 on the Nov. 8 ballot.
