Pirates get rookie forward Miele back for Sunday’s game against Manchester

The Phoenix Coyotes have assigned forward Andy Miele to the Portland Pirates.

Miele appeared in five games for the Coyotes without scoring a point. The 2011 Hobey Baker Award winner had three goals and four assists in four games with Portland before being recalled on Oct. 21.

The Pirates end an eight-day layoff Sunday afternoon when they visit the Manchester Monarchs.

NHL: Jeff Halpern and Troy Brouwer scored 1:09 apart in the second period, and the visiting Washington Capitals pulled away to beat the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-1.

• T.J. Oshie had two goals and an assist, and David Backes got the go-ahead score early in the third period for St. Louis in a 3-2 win over visiting Vancouver.

• Steven Stamkos posted his fourth career hat trick, and Vincent Lecavalier scored at 4:06 of overtime to give Tampa Bay a 5-4 win over visiting Chicago.

• Erik Cole and Andrei Kostitsyn scored in the second period, and Montreal earned its fourth consecutive victory, 2-1 at Ottawa.

• Jhonas Enroth made 29 saves to lead Buffalo to a 2-1 win over visiting Calgary.

GOLF

HSBC CHAMPIONS: Fredrik Jacobson shot a 6-under 66 and tied the 36-hole tournament record at 11 under, taking a one-stroke lead over Louis Oosthuizen and Adam Scott in the World Golf Championships event at Shanghai.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Michael Allen shot a 2-under 69 for a share of the second-round lead with Fred Couples and David Frost in the season-ending Charles Schwab Championship at San Francisco.

TENNIS

SWISS INDOORS: Novak Djokovic fought back after losing the first set to beat Marcos Baghdatis 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals at Basel, Switzerland. The top-ranked Serb stayed on course to meet hometown favorite Roger Federer in the final for a third straight year. Federer, the defending champion, beat Andy Roddick, 6-3, 6-2.

BOXING

OLYMPICS: After winning a long fight to get into the Olympics, female boxers are at the center of a dress code debate ahead of the 2012 London Games, including whether they should wear skirts in the ring.

The International Amateur Boxing Association said officials will meet in January to discuss the issue and draw up recommendations.
