BIDDEFORD — Conner Sullivan scored 12 points and Brandon Tomah chipped in 11 as the University of Southern Maine opened its men’s basketball season with a 66-51 victory over the University of New England Tuesday night.

Mike Poulin scored nine points, and Chris Pagentine and Ethan Cushman had eight apiece.

Leading 28-23 at halftime, the Huskies broke it open with a 13-0 run in the opening minutes of the second half. They increased it to 26 by exploiting a weakness in the paint, where they outscored UNE 48-12.

Jordan Ferreira had 15 points for UNE.

 

MAINE: The Black Bears signed guard/forward Dimitry Coronel of Boston as a recruit for the fall of 2012.

Coronel, who attends Tabor Academy in Marion, Mass., was named All-NEPSAC Class A last season, averaging 17 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

 

MAINE: The Black Bears announced the signings of shooting guard Lauren Bodine of Louisville, Ky., guard Brittany Wells of Indianapolis and guard/forward Elizabeth Wood of Catlee, Va., as recruits for the fall of 2012.

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN-COLBY: Bowdoin announced its ticket distribution plan for the Dec. 3 game at Watson Arena.

Although all regular-season sporting events at Bowdoin are free admission, a ticket will be required for entry to this game and be available Nov. 23 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the athletic department office on the second floor of the Peter Buck Center. Tickets will be distributed until 5 p.m. or until they are gone.

The department is closed Nov. 24-25 and any remaining tickets will be available Nov. 28 at 8:30 a.m.

NOTES

UMAINE-FARMINGTON-ST. JOSEPH’S: The men’s and women’s basketball games at Farmington were postponed due to a power outage.

No makeup dates were announced.
