Morgan Sewall, a 14-year-old freshman at Scarborough High, earned the fourth and final berth in the U.S. Figure Skating National Championships for novice ladies this morning at the Eastern Sectionals in Jamestown, N.Y.

In sixth place of 12 skaters after Thursday’s short program, Sewall overcame a fall Friday morning to place fourth in the free skate with a score that leap-frogged her over the girls in fourth and fifth place, with a two-day total of 98.50 points.

Skaters from Washington, D.C., and New Jersey finished at 98.19 and 97.63, respectively.

The top three places remained unchanged, with Madison Vinci (111.49), Brianna Laxon (110.41) and Olivia Serafini (103.30) advancing to the nationals, scheduled for January in San Jose, Calif.

Sewall twice qualified for Junior Nationals in the juvenile and intermediate divisions. This was her first attempt at the novice level, which involves more rigorous standards for advancing.

Sewall’s program included a pair of double jumps done in combination along with a double Lutz, double loop and double toe-loop done in combination.

She represents the North Atlantic Figure Skating Club.
