PORTLAND — Quarterback Paul McDonough scored twice and intercepted a pass all in the final nine minutes of the Class B state football championship game to give Wells a 21-13 victory over Leavitt.
Trailing 13-7 after three quarters and having turned the ball over three times, the Warriors (12-0) rallied late in their first appearance in the title game since 1997. McDonough scored on a 10-yard run and Joey Spinelli added the point-after kick to make it 14-13.
After returning an interception to the 3, McDonough scored on a quarterback sneak with 2:05 remaining. Leavitt (11-1) drove to the Wells 26 before Gavin Snapp intercepted a pass at the 5 with 19 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Louis DiTomasso rushed for 116 yards and a touchdown for Wells. Jordan Hersom completed 9 of 15 passes for 126 yards for Leavitt.
