PORTLAND — A Massachusetts boxer who turned a career on the skids into a world championship and was made famous in the Academy Award-winning film “The Fighter” is coming to Maine.
Micky Ward will be at the Stevens Avenue Armory in Portland on Saturday night for the finals of USA Boxing’s New England Championships.
A native of Lowell, Mass., Ward overcame a sliding boxing career and the antics of his family to win the light welterweight championship in 2000. In “The Fighter,” he was portrayed by actor Mark Wahlberg.
Ward is the Portland Boxing Club’s guest of honor at Saturday’s bouts. He’ll be on hand when the doors open at 6 p.m. The boxing matches start at 8 p.m.
