ORONO – Lauren Clarke scored five of her 11 points in overtime Saturday as Brown earned a 61-59 victory against Maine in the championship game of the women’s basketball Dead River Company Classic.

After Clarke hit two free throws in the first minute of overtime, Corinne Wellington made three straight points to put Maine up 59-58. Clarke hit a go-ahead layup with 1:02 to play and added a free throw with two seconds left.

Maine overcame a 54-48 deficit in the final 1:50 of regulation, with Ashleigh Roberts making a layup with 19 seconds left to tie it at 56-56.

Lindsay Nickel had 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals for Brown. Roberts scored 15 points for Maine (2-3).

MEN’S HOCKEY

BOWDOIN 5, SALVE REGINA 2: Tim McGarry scored twice to help the Polar Bears (2-1-1) down the Seahawks (2-4) in the opener of the Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff Classic at Waterville.

Robert Toczylowski, David Chute and Harry Matheson also scored for Bowdoin. Ryan Collier and Jordan Lalor each had two assists.

UNE 6, SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE 3: Brendan Brickley had two goals and an assist, and Jared Melman had a goal and two assists to lead the Nor’easters (2-4) past the Penmen (1-6-1) in the opener of the Manchester PAL Stovepipe tournament at Hooksett, N.H.

UNE used three second-period goals to take a 4-2 lead and outshot the Penmen 35-14.
