Actress and part-time Maine resident Glenn Close is known for her love of Giorgio Armani on the red carpet. But she’s also been spotted at red-carpet events wearing elegant gowns by other designers, such as Oscar de la Renta and Zac Posen.

At tonight’s premier Hollywood awards ceremony, Close will walk the red carpet as one of the best actress Oscar nominees for her title role in “Albert Nobbs.” Recently, at events related to the release of the film – a tale about a woman pretending to a be a man – the actress has reflected the film’s gender identity themes with pantsuits by the likes of Stella McCartney and Armani Prive.

But what would Close wear if she chose a designer associated with Maine? We asked three of the state’s leading women’s wear designers to tell us how they would dress Close for her turn on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

Here’s what they had to say:

SELECTED OUTFIT: Royal blue gown style #SA1043

AVAILABLE LOCALLY AT: Simply You in Saco, Spoil Me in Falmouth and Tavecchia in Portland

DESIGNER ASHLEY LAUREN KERR: “Every photo I have seen her in, she is always wearing black with blue earrings. I suggest for her to wear a royal blue dress with accent beading. The beading on the front and back of the dress is elegant and sophisticated and attention grabbing. The material, color and fabric will look fabulous on the red carpet. If she wants to wear black, we also offer this style in black, so she still has options. I don’t think she should take risks. I think this is a classic-fitting dress, and could only be good for her.”

DESIGNER JILL MCGOWAN: “If I were to dress Glenn Close for the Academy Awards I would go with something really feminine to contrast the role she just played in the ‘Albert Nobbs’ film. My theme would be vintage and local. The white poet’s shirt (Jean – named after my younger sister), Portia Clark’s freshwater pearls and a pleated red silk vintage Valentino skirt is a striking combination, and I think it would really suit Ms. Close’s personal style. The vintage Valentino skirt was purchased through my friend Colleen Donovan at Foreside Antiques on Route 1 in Falmouth.”
