HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The University of Maine softball team went 1-1 on Sunday in the Hofstra Invitational.

Kiki Saveriano struck out five in a three-hitter as Connecticut (6-9) shut out the Black Bears (5-19) in five innings, 8-0.

Amy Vaughan hit a two-run homer to cap a three-run first inning for Connecticut. The Huskies tacked on five more in the fifth.

Maine then beat Hofstra, 3-2.

The Black Bears (6-19) scored three runs in the third and Kylie Sparks held the Pride (4-12) to three hits.

Maine got an RBI single from Dagmar Ralphs, an RBI double from Jennifer Eberhardt and a sacrifice fly from EmJ Fogel.

COLBY SPLITS WITH ST. CATHERINE: Lauren Becker singled home the go-ahead run and Katie Graichen added a sacrifice fly as the Mules (1-1) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth and took an 8-6 win in the second game of a doubleheader with the Wildcats (2-2) at Clermont, Fla.

Becker had three hits and two RBI and Meaghan Lewia had two hits and two runs scored.

St. Catherine won the opener 4-1. Becker had an RBI single.

BASEBALL

FORDHAM 3, MAINE 2: Matthew Cianci doubled and scored on a fielder’s choice by Ryan Maghini in the top of the ninth inning to give the Rams (7-12) the edge over the Black Bears (6-11) in the Seton Hall Strike Out Cancer Tournament at South Orange, N.J.

Joseph Charest pitched a four-hitter for Fordham, which took a 2-0 lead in the first three innings. Maine tied it with a bases-loaded walk by Eric White in the seventh and an RBI double by Colin Gay in the eighth.

LAWRENCE 8, COLBY 7: Richie Foreman scored on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Vikings (1-4) over the Mules at Fort Myers, Fla.

Lawrence rallied from a 6-2 deficit with five runs in the sixth. Colby tied it in the top of the ninth.

COLBY 12, NEW PALTZ STATE 9: Taro Gold hit a two-run double and Brendan Gallagher added a two-run single as the Mules (2-2) scored five times in the top of the ninth to down the Hawks (8-5) at Fort Myers, Fla.

Jason Buco had three hits for Colby.

BATES, SWARTHMORE SPLIT: Mekae Hyde was 4 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBI and Nate Pajka was 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and two RBI to help the Bobcats (9-4) take a 7-2 win over the Garnet (12-4) in the second game at Swarthmore, Pa.

Kevin McGregor added two hits and three RBI and Michael Spinosa tossed a five-hitter for the win.

In the opener, Nicko Burnett and Tim Kwilos each had two hits and three RBI to lead Swarthmore to a 13-0 win. Kyle Crawford fanned five in a five-hit shutout.

AMHERST SWEEPS BOWDOIN: Kevin Heller went 5 for 7 with two RBI and three runs scored to help the Jeffs (2-1) earn 7-3 and 7-1 wins over the Polar Bears (7-3) at the Central Florida Invitational in Winter Haven, Fla.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

CASTLETON STATE 18, USM 10: Amanda Flodstrom had four goals and four assists and Angelica Mazzola also scored four times as the Spartans (2-2) downed the Huskies (2-3) at Castleton, Vt.

Jacki Kelly scored four goals for Southern Maine.

COLBY 17, BUFFALO STATE 8: Alex Mintz scored three goals and Sarah Lux had two goals and five assists to help the Mules (4-0) down the Bengals (4-1) at Clermont, Fla.

Katharine Eddy added two goals and three assists for Colby, which led 7-1 in the first half. Lane McVey, Katie Griffin and Lindsey McKenna also scored twice for the Mules.
