SOUTH BERWICK — Police in South Berwick are looking for the vandal or vandals who knocked over a statue worth at least $10,000 on the grounds of the historic Hamilton House gardens and stole the head.

Lt. Chris Burbank says officers responded to the Hamilton House gardens on Tuesday and found a marble statue of what appeared to be a woman shattered on the ground.

The statue was encased in a wooden box to protect it from the winter weather.

Police tell Foster’s Daily Democrat the statue was “far too heavy” for the wind to knock down.

The statue’s head was also missing. The statue is estimated by police to be worth between $10,000 and $15,000.
