PORTLAND — Nan Cumming, the former long time executive director of Portland Trails, has agreed to join the Maine Island Trail Association as its Campaign Director.

The announcement was made by Doug Welch, Executive Director of Maine Island Trail.

“As the queen of land trails in southern Maine, she has transformed recreational opportunities in the city of Portland and contributed materially to its recognition as one of the nation’s most liveable cities,” Welch said in a prepared statement.

Cumming announced in November that she would be leaving Portland Trails to take a position as Executive Director of the Maine Crafts Association. She served 12 years with Portland Trails.

Her new job did not work out, Welch said, which led to her being hired as MITA’s Campaign Director.

The Maine Island Trail has grown since it was established in 1988. The majority of the trail is now composed of privately owned islands, including many land trust properties. The trail is popular among sea kayakers.
