CORNISH — A teenaged boy, armed with a BB gun, forced authorities to shut down a major highway in Cornish this afternoon.

Lt. Louis Nyitray of the Maine State Police said a female caller notified police around 4 p.m. that a subject, who was standing in the backyard next to her home, was pointing a rifle at her Main Street home.

A team of state police troopers along with deputies from the York County Sheriff Department set up road blocks at both ends of Main Street, which is also known as Route 25. The road remain closed for nearly an hour.

When police arrived at the home, they found a 14-year-old boy sitting inside a car.

“He had been target shooting,” Nyitray said. “And the neighbor’s house was in the line of fire. It was a very, very bad choice on his part.”

The boy was turned over to the custody of his mother, and could face charges depending on the outcome of an investigation by juvenile authorities.
