NORFOLK, Va. — Fran Whitten went 4 for 6 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead the University of Maine to a 16-5 baseball win over Norfolk State on Friday.

Maine (8-14) scored five runs in the top of the first. Alex Calbick had an RBI single in the first and homered in the second to help the Black Bears stretch their lead to 7-0.

Ian Leisenheimer added a two-run triple and Brian Doran doubled home two runs during a six-run fifth.

Stephen Perakslis (2-2) allowed one run and eight hits in six innings.

ST. JOSEPH’S 5, UMASS-BOSTON 0: Joe Gruntkosky had a career-high 10 strikeouts and allowed five hits in eight innings as the Monks (12-2) beat the Beacons (8-6) in their home opener.
UMass-Boston’s Michael Boughton retired the first 15 batters before Nic Lops led off the sixth with a single to right field. Lops eventually scored on a single by Sam Butts. The Monks added two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth.

TRINITY 7, COLBY 5: Michael Rueger broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the fifth inning, and the Bantams (12-5, 1-0 NESCAC East) went on to beat the Mules (7-6, 0-1) at Waterville.

Jason Buco hit a solo home run for Colby and later stole home.

TUFTS 8, BATES 2: Nate Pajka scored both runs for Bates (11-5, 0-1 NESCAC East) in a loss to the Jumbos (9-3, 1-0) at Lewiston.

Ryan Sonberg squeezed home Pajka in the sixth, and Steve Burke hit an RBI double in the eighth.

SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS WITH EMERSON: Rae-Mare Copan pitched a three-hitter and Emily Leverone drove in three runs as St. Joseph’s (10-4, 5-1 GNAC) earned a split with a 4-0 victory over Emerson (13-6, 7-1) at Standish. Emerson won the opener, 9-0.

TUFTS 8, BOWDOIN 0: Jo Clair homered twice and drove in four runs for the Jumbos (12-3) in a five-inning win over the Polar Bears (12-5) at Medford, Mass.

Caroline Dewar’s bunt single in the fourth inning was the only hit for Bowdoin. 

HUSSON SWEEPS COLBY: Winning pitcher Becca McCarty drove in two runs in the opener, and Kayla Merrill had three RBI in the second game as Husson (7-5) won twice against Colby (2-9), beating the Mules 7-3 and 10-4 at Bangor.

Aimee Polimeno went 3 for 3 and scored twice for Colby in the first game. Meaghan Lewia was 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Lindsay Peterson and Brianne Wheeler each had two RBI in the second game.

 BATES, TRINITY SPLIT: Kelsey Flaherty hit a tiebreaking single in the sixth inning and Anna Marie Martino added an RBI triple in the seventh as Bates (5-5) beat Trinity 4-2 in the first game of a doubleheader at Hartford, Conn.

Trinity (7-6) won the second game, 5-1.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

SIMMONS 14, ST. JOSEPH’S 10: Kirsten McCombs and Amelia Santos each scored three goals for St. Joseph’s (3-2, 2-1 GNAC), but the Monks were held to two second-half goals in a loss to Simmons (3-5, 2-1) at Deering High’s Memorial Field.
