PORTLAND — Moninda Marube, a 33-year-old Kenyan runner living in Auburn with the family of Edward Little High cross-country coach Dan Campbell, became the first African winner of Maine’s oldest road race Sunday afternoon.
Marube won the 83rd annual Patriots Day 5-miler by more than a minute, finishing in 25 minutes, 14 seconds. He said he ran not for the prize money – the winner earns $175 – but as part of his training for the upcoming Vermont City marathon.
Clayton Conrad of North Yarmouth was second in 26:18 and Judson Cake of Bar Harbor third in 26:20.
Meredith Freimer, 32, of Portland was the first female finisher. Her time of 31:30 was 25 seconds faster than that of runner-up Erzie Nagy, a 17-year-old junior at Lawrence High, of Albion. Kristine Guaraldo of Brewer was third in 32:24.
A field of nearly 500 runners enjoyed sunshine and breezy conditions from downtown Portland around Back Cove and back to Cumberland Avenue, where the race finished in front of the entrance to the Boys and Girls Club.
