PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The arrest of alleged New England mafia boss Anthony DiNunzio has been hailed as “another nail in the coffin” for organized crime in Rhode Island.

State police superintendent Col. Steven O’Donnell said Wednesday that the 53-year-old DiNunzio was arrested at a social club in the North End section of Boston.

Authorities allege he participated in the shakedown of Providence-area strip clubs for protection payments and met with members of the Gambino crime family in an effort to expand the mob’s reach.

Not guilty pleas were entered on DiNunzio’s behalf on charges including racketeering conspiracy and extortion conspiracy.
