WINDHAM — A Standish man, who has been blind in his left eye since birth, was accidentally shot in the left eye by his son while father and son were hunting turkey in Windham this morning.

Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Warden Service said that 61-year-old Joseph Kennedy of Deerfield Circle had to be taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center.

Kennedy underwent surgery. His condition was not available.

MacDonald said that Kennedy and his 29-year-old son Kevin Kennedy of Westbrook were hunting turkey off Anderson Road in Windham just before 10 a.m. when the two decided to split up in pursuit of different flocks.

After hearing a gunshot, the younger Kennedy began walking toward the sound of the gunshot.

He spotted two turkeys and opened fire at one of the birds. MacDonald said Kennedy fired three rounds.
One of the bird shot pellets entered a wooded area where his father had been hunting. That pellet entered his father’s left eye.

Shortly before 6 p.m., a spokesman from Maine Medical Center said that Joseph Kennedy was in satisfactory condition.
