HARRISON — A mother and her daughter were killed Wednesday afternoon when their 2007 Ford Mustang crossed the center line on Route 117 in Harrison and collided head-on with a logging truck.

Capt. Don Goulet of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Linda Labonte, 63, of Harrison was driving south on Route 117 when her car crossed the centerline and hit a logging truck driven by Jeffery Coffin, 43, of South Paris.

Coffin was not injured, but Labonte was pronounced dead at the scene.

Labonte’s 85-year-old mother, Carmen Smith of Harrison, was extricated from the wreckage and taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where she died.

Goulet said the logging truck left the road and crashed, spilling some of its load. The Maine Department of Environmental Protection responded and cleaned up about 180 gallons of diesel fuel.

The cause of the accident, which occurred around 3:30 p.m., remains under investigation.
