GORHAM – David Ricker had three hits and scored twice to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 6-1 baseball win over Bates on Wednesday.

Nick Grady’s two-run single helped Southern Maine (20-16) take a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

Ryan Sonberg had four hits for Bates (21-16).

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

GORDON 13, UNE 10: Stephanie Fitzgerald scored four goals and Anna Blomberg had three to help the third-seeded Fighting Scots (14-3) down the second-seeded Nor’easters (12-5) in a Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinal at Biddeford.

Gordon scored three unanswered goals in the final two minutes of the first half to take an 8-5 lead.

Hannah Tavella scored six goals for UNE.

TRACK AND FIELD

ST. JOSEPH’S: The Monks will add indoor and outdoor men’s and women’s track and field as varsity sports in the 2012-13 academic year.

Ray Putnam, head coach of the cross country teams, will coach the new program. He coached the school’s club track and field team this season.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

NORTH CAROLINA: The Tar Heels hired former North Carolina guard and NBA veteran Hubert Davis as an assistant men’s basketball coach.

Davis was a first-round draft pick in 1992 and played 12 years in the NBA. He spent the past seven years as a college basketball analyst on ESPN. Davis replaced Jerod Haase, who left in March after nine years as an assistant to become head coach at Alabama-Birmingham.

JIMMY V CLASSIC: North Carolina State will play in the tournament that honors the Wolfpack’s former coach.

N.C. State will face Connecticut and Texas will take on Georgetown in the doubleheader at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 4. It is the second time the Wolfpack will play in the event, which benefits the V Foundation for Cancer Research founded by Jim Valvano and ESPN.
