MEDFORD, Mass. – Beau Wood scored in the second overtime as Tufts captured the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s lacrosse championship Sunday with a 9-8 victory over Bowdoin.
Keegan Mehlhorn scored three goals for third-seeded Bowdoin (13-5), which forced overtime with two goals in the last four minutes of regulation.
Sean Kirwan had four goals for top-seeded Tufts (16-2), which earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. Bowdoin received an at-large berth and will host Mt. Ida (15-4) in a first-round game Wednesday.
MAINE 4, ALBANY 2: Sam Balzano’s two-run single capped a ninth-inning comeback as the Black Bears (23-21, 9-6 America East) beat the Great Danes (16-28-1, 10-7) at Albany, N.Y.
Maine trailed 2-1 going to the ninth but tied it on a bases-loaded walk to Colin Gay before Balzano’s winning hit.
BOWDOIN 9, SUFFOLK 8: Beau Breton hit a long fly ball over a drawn-in outfield to drive home pinch-runner Jon Fraser in the 10th inning and give the Polar Bears (23-16) a win over the Rams (20-23) at Brunswick.
Tim McGarry reached base four times and had a two-run triple for Bowdoin. Dan Findley contributed three hits, including an RBI single.
BATES SWEEPS WILLIAMS: The Bobcats (22-16) scored six runs in the sixth inning for a 6-2 win in Game 1, then used a five-run third inning in Game 2 for a 6-4 victory over the Ephs (16-19) at Lewiston.
Jeffery Gunn tied the first game with a two-run single and scored on Ryan Sonberg’s triple. Mike Ciummei and Kevin McGregor each added an RBI single.
Bates trailed 3-0 in the second game before its third-inning rally, highlighted by Mekae Hyde’s two-run double.
HARTFORD 4, MAINE 3: Lindsay Jenkins and Dagmar Ralphs each drove in a run for the Black Bears (17-28-1, 8-9-1 America East), who lost their regular-season finale against the Hawks (10-41, 4-14) at West Hartford, Conn.
Maine is the No. 4 seed for the America East tournament and will face top-seeded Boston University in its opener Thursday in Boston.
