Fire destroyed a three-car garage in Scarborough early this morning but firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to the attached home.

Smoke alarms roused the family living at 152 Holmes Rd. just before 1 a.m. Firefighters arrived and there were flames already consuming the garage, said Fire Chief Michael Thurlow.

Firefighters were challenged by the lack of hydrants in the area and had to run long lines of hoses to extinguish the fire. The fire was under control in a couple hours but firefighters remained on the scene until 6:30 a.m., Thurlow said.

Nobody was injured in the fire. One car was in the garage and was destroyed, he said.
