GREENLAND, N.H. (AP) — Nearly a month after a shootout claimed the life of its police chief, the New Hampshire town of Greenland has officially sworn in its new chief.

Tara Laurent had to take charge when Chief Michael Maloney was killed as he and members of a drug task force tried to serve a search warrant at the home of Cullen Mutrie on April 12. Mutrie wounded three other officers before killing his girlfriend and himself.

During Wednesday’s ceremony, Laurent awarded medals of valor to three Greenland officers who tried to talk to Mutrie before the drug task force moved in and attended to the injured officers.

Board of Selectmen Chairman John Penacho said since Laurent took control, she has been the calm, controlling presence the town needed.
