YARMOUTH — One of Yarmouth’s longest serving town councilors has died at the age of 79.

Erving H. “Erv” Bickford died Saturday at his home on Westcustogo Point in Yarmouth after a long illness.

Bickford took great pride in his town, and was an avid collector of antique trucks — he has more than 300 trucks in his collection — said his daughter, Tamson Bickford Hamrock of Yarmouth.

“He is known across the country for his truck collection,” Hamrock said Sunday night.

Bickford’s family plans to break ground this summer on an open station platform structure at Railroad Square where portions of Bickford’s truck collection will be displayed.

After he was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, Bickford took up walking for exercise. During those walks, he’d pick up trash he found along his route.

“He took so much pride in his town,” his daughter said.

Town Manager Nat Tupper said Bickford’s seat on the Town Council will be filled in the June 12 election. Bickford’s term was due to expire, and he was not seeking re-election.

Bickford was elected to the Town Council in 1978 and served for eight three-year terms, including several as chairman.
