SOUTH PORTLAND — Voters today approved a $39.9 million school operating budget, with 60 percent voting in favor and 40 percent opposed.

The vote was 414 to 277.

The budget, which will increase taxes by nearly 1.8 percent, was trimmed $136,000 by the school board to bring the total in line with the expectations of the City Council.

The budget eliminates a part-time communications position and stipends for elementary school teacher-leaders, and maintains the status quo for field trip funding.
