PORTLAND — City Manager Mark Rees announced Thursday that he has chosen an official from Brookline, Mass., to be Portland’s next director of planning and community development.

Jeffrey Levine, the current planning and urban development director of Brookline, would bring a wealth of experience to the job, including expertise in multi-modal transportation issues, affordable housing and complex zoning and land-use regulations, Rees said in a prepared statement.

His selection will be considered by the City Council on Monday.

Levine is expected to work for the city part time from July 9 until Sept. 4, while he and his family move to the Portland area.

Levine’s selection concludes a five-month search in which candidates were interviewed by the city staff, community leaders and housing experts.

A graduate of Wesleyan University, Levine earned his master’s degree in planning and economic development from the University of Minnesota.
