WELLS — The Army Corps of Engineers plans to dredge 20,000 cubic yards of sand from Wells Harbor in southern Maine to make it safer for boaters.

WLBZ-TV (http://on.wlbz2.com/K5koXZ ) says the dredging boat the USS Currituck will move the sand from an entrance channel to a federal waterway and deposit it near the shore of Wells Beach. The dredging should wrap up by Thursday.

The sand is apparently creating shoaling situations which can be hazardous for boats entering and exiting the harbor.

This is a stopgap measure. A full dredge was permitted last year, but the U.S. Congress has not yet funded the work.
