STONY BROOK, N.Y. — Fran Whitten hit a grand slam and the University of Maine scored seven runs in the first inning to beat Albany 8-3 in an elimination game Thursday at the America East baseball tournament.

The Black Bears (27-27) fell behind 3-0 in the top of the first inning but answered quickly in the bottom half, sending 12 men to the plate. Four hits and two walks led to three runs before Whitten’s grand slam gave Maine a 7-3 lead.

Maine starter Stephen Perakslis settled down after a shaky start and made it through seven innings, allowing just three hits after the first inning. D.J. Voisine worked the final two innings.

Maine’s final run came on an RBI single by Tyler Patzalek in the seventh.

The Black Bears will play another elimination game today against Binghamton, which lost to Stony Brook, 7-4.
